A pork industry expert says there’s been a boost of optimism for pig farmers.

“No doubt this industry has faced some pretty serious challenges over the last 36 months,” said David Newman, senior vice president of market growth with the National Pork Board, at the 2025 Iowa Pork Congress on Wednesday.

Newman says producers have started the year with some momentum. “I think that we’ve got a little tailwind right now in the markets,” he said. “We just came through one of the best Q4s we’ve ever had in this business where typically we see that seasonal decline.”

He tells Brownfield demand for pork has picked up steam. “That was great to see because there’s nothing that I like more than knowing that our producers can be in the black and not in the red.”

Newman says domestic market development will be a top priority for NPB in 2025.

He spoke to Brownfield at the 2025 Iowa Pork Congress in Des Moines. That interview can be heard below.
