Demand for protein is driving more cottage cheese production

The President and CEO of the National Milk Producers Federation is not surprised by the increased demand for cottage cheese.

Gregg Doud tells Brownfield the combination of new dietary guidelines, the use of GLP-1 medications, and social media popularity is building demand for cottage cheese. “Is this a flash-in-the-pan kind of social media thing, or is it something we can change and redo a plant based on it? My answer is the protein dynamic and change is real in this country.”

Recently, AMPI announced it is converting its Cheddar cheese plant in Blair, Wisconsin to cottage cheese production, and when finished, it will be one of the largest cottage cheese producers in the U.S.

Doud says the science is clear, saying people need more protein and the dairy industry is well-positioned to deliver what consumers want.
