Despite slower economy, demand for proteins increasing in Colombia
A Colombian-based food processing company says demand for proteins is growing in his country.
Alejandro Montoya with Groupa Nutresa, tells Brownfield interest in beef, pork and poultry is at an all-time high. “Even though those proteins get to be more expensive for people, and the economy is very tough right now, people need to eat and feed themselves.”
He says Colombia imports the majority of pork and protein from several countries including the US. “Most of the time we see prices in the states more competitive than the internal market.”
Montoya says African Swine Fever and highly pathogenic avian influenza are potential trade barriers.
Brownfield interviewed Montoya at USMEF’s Global Processing Seminar at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
