Dicamba deadlines approaching

Deadlines for the use and sale of dicamba are quickly approaching.

Kevin Johnson, president of the Illinois Fertilizer and Chemical Association, says the EPA’s Existing Stocks Policy sets the deadline for sale of over-the-top dicamba products.

“If you’ve already bought from your retailer, you are fine.”  He says, “If you have already talked to your retailer and they’re gonna custom apply it, just have that conversation before May 13th.”

He says dicamba can be used for this growing season.

“There is a June 12th cutoff date on dicamba, so you cannot apply after June 12th,” he says.

States have specific guidelines on dicamba applications, and Johnson says its use needs to be well-documented.

“If you fill out 21 of 22 questions and you get turned in for a dicamba violation, you are automatically going to get into a $750 fine.”  He says, “So, I plead with guys, do your recordkeeping.”

Johnson says the future of dicamba is in question and expects more guidance from federal agencies on the product this summer.
