Diversifying revenue opportunities for dairy farmers

Margins are tight for many dairy producers and some are looking for ways to diversify their revenue.

A recent survey from the University of Missouri found commercial dairies in the state have decreased nearly 70% over the past decade. Central-Missouri dairy farmer Ted Bruemmer says he’s found a market selling bull calves and there’s a long waiting list.

“The bull calf market has been pretty hot.”

He tells Brownfield he’s able to meet the needs of the industry.

“There’s not as many dairy cattle in this state, especially not in our area there’s only two left in our county.”

Bruemmer Dairy milks about 160 cows and has 150 to 200 acres of row crops near Jefferson City, Missouri.

Stangler recently interviewed Bruemmer during a June Dairy Month event at Central Dairy in Jefferson City, Missouri.
