DMC signups down some in Wisconsin

A Wisconsin Farm Service Agency official says there were a few less producers signing up for the Dairy Margin Coverage program in his state this year.  Deputy Executive Director Tyler Radke says, “We had a fair amount of sign-ups. Maybe not quite as much as in the past but several thousand producers.”

Radke tells Brownfield many producers couldn’t justify the premium when looking at the likely payout. “Coming into the sign-up, the futures were not projecting a whole lot of payments so I think that shyed some producers away. As we got closer, futures unfortunately have dropped and so we saw kind of a pick up near the end of producers coming in to sign up.”

Radke says markets can change overnight greatly impacting milk checks so hopefully producers that need the safety net were able to sign up before Monday’s deadline.

Radke spoke to Brownfield during the WPS Farm Show is Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
