Does rain on Easter Sunday really mean rain the next seven Sundays?

Could farmers see rain the next seven Sundays? A climatologist says maybe.

Much of the Midwest saw rain on Easter Sunday, and according to the old wive’s tale that means it’ll rain the next seven Sundays.

Climatologist Eric Snodgrass, at Nutrien Ag Solutions, says there’s some truth to it…

“If you think about it, the typical cadence of low-pressure systems in spring is about one a week.”  He says, “So, if you happen to get the one that comes over on Easter, well guess what? A week later we typically have another one. It kind of is a self-fulfilling prophecy.”

He tells Brownfield those rains are needed this year…

“And I know a lot of farmers would like it as well, just to make sure that we beat back any residual problem we had with last fall’s drought still lingering there in our subsurface soil moisture,” he says.

Snodgrass predicts more frequent rains through much of April, but he does not expect a delayed planting season in the Midwest.
