Don’t underestimate soybean cyst nematode
An extension crops educator is concerned too many farmers underestimate the threat of soybean cyst nematode.
Angie Peltier with the University of Minnesota says SCN is the biggest soybean yield-limiting pathogen in the Midwest.
“It’s a huge deal, and I’m amazed that more people aren’t concerned about this significant pest.”
She tells Brownfield the fall is a perfect time to take action against SCN.
“And that’s because while we can sometimes actually see with the naked eye the female nematodes on roots, that can tell you that a field is infested. But what’s really important is to collect soil samples.”
Peltier says samples should be taken with a soil probe at 8-inch depth targeting 15 to 20 different spots from a field area no larger than 10 to 20 acres.
