Doud: Global milk production up, U.S. competitive

U.S. dairy is staying competitive on the global market despite increased production from other countries.

Gregg Doud with the National Milk Producers Federation tells Brownfield world dairy production is up and product is moving but at some point, prices will change. “It’s the Europeans. Again, they’re up seven percent. They totally overshot the target. The Kiwis are up. So the question is, who blinks first on all of this and I don’t think we know the answer to that yet.”

Doud says even with more milk on the global market, an unexpected trend is keeping U.S. dairy competitive. “In 2025, all of the new cheese processing capacity that came online, the incremental increase in cheese production in the U.S. in the last year, all of it was exported. All of it.”

Doud says consumers want more protein, especially with the new dietary guidelines and the popularity of GLP weight loss medications.

Doud spoke with Brownfield during the Professional Dairy Producers Business Conference in Madison, Wisconsin.
