Dr. Bob James dies
A leading educator on raising dairy calves has died.
Dr. Robert Elliott James, best known as Dr. Bob, helped start the Professional Dairy Heifer Growers Association, now known as the Dairy Calf and Heifer Association. The former Virginia Tech professor and consultant with Down Home Heifer Solutions was instrumental in developing DHIA’s Gold Standards for raising dairy calves, heifers, and dairy-beef animals and mentored many of today’s calf and heifer academia, industry experts and calf and heifer raisers.
James died Thursday after a short illness. Arrangements are pending.
It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Dr. Bob James.
He was an outstanding expert in calf rearing and a source of knowledge and inspiration for so many in our industry around the world.
Beyond his remarkable expertise, I always valued his clear, practical, and generous way of sharing knowledge. His contributions have shaped how countless farmers, advisors, and companies approach calf management, and his influence will continue to live on in the work of many.
I held the deepest respect for him as a colleague and as a person. His passing is a great loss for our calf community.
My sincere condolences go out to his family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to work with him. May he rest in peace.
