Drought conditions ease in Kentucky

Drought conditions have improved in much of Kentucky.

The USDA says that after two straight months of above normal precipitation, just the southeastern corner of Kentucky remains abnormally dry, and December 2024 was one of the warmest on record, with statewide temperatures averaging 40 degrees.

Drought during the fall did lead to earlier than normal hay feeding, but 83% of the state does have adequate to surplus supplies and 77% of livestock is rated good to excellent, above a year ago.

80% of winter wheat is in good to excellent condition, 6% more than this time last year, while tobacco stripping is 82% complete, slightly behind the previous year’s pace.

The USDA’s weekly crop progress and condition reports resume in April.
