Drought conditions reduce soybean yields in Ohio

A northwest Ohio farmer says hot and dry weather during the growing season has impacted his 2025 crop.

Justin Gravatt says he only planted soybeans this year and yields are down. 

“We didn’t have any rain in August, but I was hoping they were going to be at least 10 bushels better,” he says. “The beans are small and they’re dry.”

He tells Brownfield moisture levels remain low.

“The first day they were at 13,” he says. “Ever since then they’ve been below 10. Right now, they’re at about 8. I’m hoping this rain that’s supposed to be coming will put a little moisture in the last 80 acres.”

Gravatt says he expects to wrap up harvest in the next few days.

The USDA’s weekly crop progress update has been delayed indefinitely by the partial shutdown of the federal government.
