Drought impacting southern Ohio corn and soybean yields

A southern Ohio farmer says drought has impacted corn and soybean yields.

Greg Corcoran says conditions have been variable.

“Our early soybeans did well, and the later planted stuff was hurt,” he says. “We’re seeing some pretty below average yields. Some are so low, they’ll be insurance claims.”

He tells Brownfield the dry summer reduced kernel size.

“There’s been pollination issues,” he says. “We’ve seen the cannibalization of the corn and some standability issues. There’s a lot of scenarios we’re going to have to deal with when we go to harvest.”

Corcoran raises corn and soybeans in Ross County.

The USDA’s weekly crop progress update has been delayed indefinitely by the ongoing federal government shutdown.
