Dry weather impacting fall vegetables

A Michigan specialty crop grower says recent dry weather has been good for harvest, but he’s concerned about late season crops.

Roger Victory grows about 14 different root crops in West Michigan.

“For our winter squash harvest, it’s just been perfect,” he says.

“The harvest was good and dry conditions allows for a very proficient harvest. However, a lot of our root crops that are for the later fall harvest that we might be harvesting in November and even first of December, they need some growth.”

Victory tells Brownfield the farm has been experiencing drought conditions since the end of August and irrigators can only do so much.

“This heat and dryness is not conducive for them,” he says. “They like a little cooler climate and ample moisture, so we’re busy irrigating.”

If the crops get enough moisture, Victory says parsnips, rutabaga, red beets, and turnips can be harvested throughout the winter.
