Dry winter causes some concern
A farmer in northeastern Iowa says the dry winter has him a bit concerned.
Bob Hemesath, who raises corn and hogs outside of Decorah, tells Brownfield, “As much as I don’t mind not having snow, we have been dry.” He says, “We did get some rains here late fall, and even right before the new year we got some rain that actually a lot of it went in the ground, and so we are concerned because we are on the dry side.”
However, he says there’s still time to catch up.
“That could change in a hurry.” He says, “A year ago, we were probably drier than we are now and went into spring and we had one of the wettest May & June that we probably ever had. Things can change quickly.”
Hemesath says timely rains throughout the growing season have a greater impact on a crop than a dry winter.
