Early harvest reports indicate tassel wrap hasn’t impacted yields
Two Ohio-based agronomists with Beck’s Hybrids say early harvest reports indicate tassel wrap issues in corn haven’t impacted yields.
Mike Hannewald says seed selection and environmental conditions could have been contributing factors.
“This year we had a few of those hybrids that came out three to five days before the tassel started shedding,” he says. “I think that was due to the fact that we were cold and damp through the middle of June and then we went hot and dry really fast. Outside of severe drought stress, I didn’t see any severe impacts through pollination.”
Luke Schulte tells Brownfield pollination was still successful in most areas, despite some growers experiencing rapid silk growth.
“In some cases, we had three inches of silk growth before there was much pollen shed,” he says. “There was a lot of pollination for that pollen, so we didn’t see that sequential pollination from the butt to the tip.”
Both agronomists say the 2025 corn crop has held up well and there haven’t been any major harvest setbacks so far.
