Eastern Missouri farmer says corn and soybeans better than expected

A farmer in eastern Missouri says corn and soybeans are doing better than expected in mid-July, considering the soil compaction issues that happened during the wet spring.

Jim Boerding, who farms in St. Charles County, tells Brownfield “time will tell. I’m sure we’ll see some declining crops due to the soil compaction. It’s hard to guess how the crop is going, because last year I thought our yields were going to be down quite a bit. The spring was kind of similar to this year, but I was surprised. Hopefully, I’m surprised this year.”

The USDA says Missouri’s corn condition rating declined slightly in the last week at 66 percent good to excellent with more than 30 percent of the corn in dough stage. Missouri’s soybean conditions stayed the same as the previous week at 57 percent good to excellent, with 25 percent of the crop setting pods.
