Eastern Nebraska farmer preparing for 2025

An eastern Nebraska farmer says he’s busy preparing for the 2025 growing season.

Quentin Connealy tells Brownfield this year was his first attempt at planting cover crops.

“With the corn acres, we went with the rye and then a turnip-radish mix with some vetch to help maintain some nutrients. On the soybean acres, we went with rye and turnips and radishes,” he says. “Mainly with the flood, we’re battling compaction, so that’s why we threw up a little mix in there, because we didn’t want to just go with the strict rye if it would break up enough compaction.”

Cover crops were planted in the first half of August and Connealy says the early returns are looking good.

“The turnips and radishes got really big on us, so it’ll be interesting to see how they look coming into spring over these dormant winter days,” he says.

Connealy farms along the Missouri River near Tekamah, along the Nebraska-Iowa border.
