Eastern Nebraska farmer welcomes rain as harvest wraps up

Some much-needed moisture fell over the weekend in eastern Nebraska.

Farmer Quentin Connealy tells Brownfield it comes at a good time.

“We had done a little bit of tillage, but the ground from the drought was so hard that tillage was not working very good, so this last two to three inches of rain we got here the last week will definitely help when it dries out,” he says.

Connealy says harvest is about 99% complete and Connealy is pleased with how things turned out.

“We didn’t have anything outstanding, with the wet start. We had a little stand issues and then it’s been super dry since the Fourth of July week. The crops just dried down really fast and we couldn’t hardly get to it fast enough,” he says. “We left some moisture out there. I think we picked a lot of the corn in between 11 to 14%.”

According to USDA, corn is 90% harvested in Nebraska, up 11% from last week and 12% better than the five-year average. Ninety-eight percent of soybeans are harvested, up 4% from a week ago and 2% better than the five-year average.

Sorghum is 81% harvested up 10% from a week ago and 3% better than the five-year average.

Winter wheat 100% planted, with 83% of the crop emerged and rated 37% good to excellent.
