ECO coverage garnering interest
A crop insurance specialist with Country Financial says farmers need to be finalizing their crop insurance decisions for the 2025 growing season.
Brenda Dozier, senior crop underwriting trainer, says there’s increased interest this year in the Enhanced Coverage Option (ECO).
“Because the federal Crop Insurance Corporation has increased the subsidy to 65% for that Enhanced Coverage Option portion.” She says, “Last year, the subsidy was only 44%.”
She tells Brownfield that reduces the cost risk for the farmer and adds another level of protection.
“It is county-based coverage on top of the underlying federal crop revenue protection policy that is individualized protection for that farmers operation.” She says, “So, they stand separately.”
Dozier says that protection is even more critical in times of a down ag economy.
“With our lower commodity prices, it is so important to meet with your crop agent and figure out with them what kind of coverage level is needed so they can meet their financial obligations,” she says.
She says farmers have until March 17th to sign up for federal crop insurance coverages.
