Economist concerned potential tariffs could hinder trade

An economist is concerned how potential new tariffs could hinder trade in 2025.

Ernie Goss, with Creighton University, tells Brownfield President-elect Donald Trump’s proposed universal tariffs of 10 to 20% create a lot of economic uncertainty.

“We do not need to see trade barriers. We do not need to see retaliation against U.S. manufacturers or agriculture, and that’s what we would see,” he says.

Goss says he’s optimistic the threat of tariffs is just a negotiating strategy.

“If the president can negotiate lower overall trade barriers, that’s very good. On the other hand, we get retaliation and our tariffs go up that’s very bad. It’s bad for economic growth and it’s bad for the manufacturing sector,” he says.

The President-Elect has denied reports that he will be peel back his tariff policy.
