Economist sees favorable corn export outlook to Mexico

An ag economist says he doesn’t expect Mexico to pull back on its purchases of U.S. corn.

Greg McBride, director of brokerage for Allendale, says the recent dispute panel ruling that overturned Mexico’s ban on GMO corn imports didn’t have much of an impact on the grain markets.

“We’re not paying attention to it right now because it hasn’t impacted our exports to Mexico. It doesn’t impact their planning on importing. They are still going to be a major importer.”

He tells Brownfield, “The corn that they’ve been buying from us has been genetically modified and they will continue to buy it that way. It doesn’t impact us, and it does keep up with the amount of demand we expect to get from them.”

McBride says the country has shifted its non-GMO focus to its domestic production.
