Egg market reversal: from historic highs to deep lows

The layer industry is concerned about low egg prices.

Steve Taylor with Indiana-based MPS Egg Farms says the market has softened significantly since peaking in early 2025.

“We’ve just come off one of the highest egg markets we’ve ever had, and now we’re going to one of the lowest egg markets we’ve ever had. So it’s a really tough transition, but it’s something that we’ve been used to.”

Speaking to Brownfield at last week’s Midwest Poultry Federation Convention in Minneapolis, he said production costs are squeezing margins.

“Feed is obviously our largest cost. We have the buildings, the management, packaging, the processing. All of that goes into putting that egg out to the market and out to our customers.”

Taylor says the egg supply has rebounded well following major highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreaks in 2022 and 2024, while demand is weaker so far in 2026.
