Egg production down 4% in October

U.S. chicken egg production saw a year-to-year decline in October.

The USDA says the monthly total of 9.192 billion eggs was down 4% on the year, on a 3% decrease in the number of laying hens to 377.045 million head and a 1% reduction in the average number of eggs per layer to 2,438 eggs per one hundred.

That did include 7.891 billion table eggs and 1.301 billion hatching eggs, most of those broiler-type.

The number of egg and broiler-type chicks hatched were above last year, with egg-type placements for future hatchery supplies 2% lower and broiler-type placements 1% higher.

The USDA’s next round of annual egg production estimates is out December 10th.
