Embracing the evolution in the cattle industry

A cattle industry expert says the industry continues to improve and evolve.

CattleFax CEO Randy Blach says the shift in mindset from the nation’s cattle and beef industry has elevated beef demand. “That quality improvement that we’ve seen across the industry is responsible for nearly all of the demand growth,” he says.

He tells Brownfield a little more than 20 years ago just about 50 percent of the beef produced in this country graded choice and prime. “In 2023 and 2024, nearly 83 percent of that total supply will grade choice and prime,” he says.

So what changed?  Blach says the industry started producing a product that consumers wanted. “Now the consumers are rewarding us for listening to the signal they’re sending through the marketplace, and the signal is very loud and clear.

Blach says the demand strength comes at a time when producers are raising record amounts of beef on a cattle inventory that has declined by 45 million head since 1975.
