Eminent domain concerns highlight Illinois Farm Bureau discussion
Concerns over eminent domain highlighted discussion by delegates at the 2024 Illinois Farm Bureau (IFB) annual meeting.
“Our members are pretty clear and have been clear. We do not like eminent domain.”
However, IFB president Brian Duncan says delegates recognize the potential opportunity some projects can bring.
“Our organization, the last three or four years, has been trying to balance the economic opportunities that come with carbon sequestration and some of these issues with the challenges related to property rights,” he says.
He says the delegate body restated its position on eminent domain, but…
“They’re open if pipeline projects can be done without using eminent domain.” He says, “We have language that says, ‘Hey, we’re cool with that.’”
Policy adopted by the delegate body shapes IFB’s lobbying efforts for the coming year.
