Ernst not optimistic a farm bill gets passed anytime soon

U.S. Senator Joni Ernst says a one-year extension of the current farm bill is looking more and more likely.

“Unfortunately, we’ve seen that stall out and I don’t know that having a new speaker is actually going to make us move on that.”

The Iowa Republican tells Brownfield, “I don’t think it’s a great way to go. We’d rather have a finalized, updated farm bill.”

Ernst says about 14% of the legislation impacts farm programs and that needs to change. “Senate Democrats, of course, want to spend more. They are engaging in discussions on the food programs, and that’s where we’ve seen the most significant amount of increase in dollars that we spend.”

The 2018 Farm Bill expired at the end of September.
