Ethanol production hits one-month low

U.S. ethanol production saw a week-to-week decline to kick off 2025.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration says production averaged 1.102 million barrels per day, a four-week low and down 9,000 on the week, but up 40,000 on the year.

Iowa State University’s Center for Agricultural and Rural Development says estimated operating margins for the average Iowa plant have narrowed.

That lower return can be tied to the weekly decrease, while the year-over-year increase is linked to demand expectations.

Ethanol stocks of 24.148 million barrels were the largest since mid-May, climbing 509,000 from the previous week, but remaining 223,000 below a year ago.

The Renewable Fuels Association says net inputs of ethanol purchased by refiners and blenders fell to a two-year low, even as the volume of gasoline supplied to the market moved higher.

Ethanol exports averaged 155,000 barrels per day, 56,000 more than the prior week, but 2,000 less than last year.

The USDA expects 5.5 billion bushels of corn to be used for ethanol this marketing year.
