Excellent moisture sets up strong winter wheat across western Kansas

Southwest Kansas farmer Gary Millershaski says he had near perfect planting conditions for his winter wheat crop.

“The western third of Kansas and especially in the northwest corner, we had the best wheat plantings in 6 or 7 years.”

He tells Brownfield moisture in early August helped recharge the soil profile and delayed the beginning of planting, but “Everything seems like its going in an unbelievable environment.”

Millershaski says the rain events also helped get his other crops across the finish line. “That gave unbelievable bushels for sorghum and corn but the biggest problem we have now is we have big mountains of sorghum and no place to go.”

The latest USDA crop progress and condition report 92 percent of corn has been harvested, and 95 percent of winter wheat has been planted.
