Expanding market access in Africa

The administrator of USDA’s Foreign Ag Service says the tremendous growth in Africa over the past couple of years provides new opportunities for U.S. agriculture.

Daniel Whitley says “one opportunity is to help them become better customers with some infrastructure growth and another opportunity is for them to be direct consumers of our products as they get richer and move to the middle class.”

Whitley says it will take a lot of investment.

“I don’t want to say there’s a one size fits all approach in Africa, but what we see in major areas like South Africa, Kenya, Ghana and Senegal rival what we see in many emerging markets around the world.”

Whitley was a guest speaker at the U.S. Meat Export Federation’s Spring Conference in Kansas City.
