Expect more waiting for a farm bill

The head lobbyist with Syngenta expects more waiting for a new five-year farm bill.

Mary Kay Thatcher tells Brownfield…

“That is not going to pass in 2024, so we’ll extend that, kick it down the road.”  She says, “I suspect till the end of September, or the end of December, of 2025.”

She says the lame duck session will be taken up by other necessities, and taxes will be at the forefront for the new Congress.

“This is really the Super Bowl of taxes that has to be renewed by the end of the year.”  She says, “Things very important to farmers like Section 199, stepped up basis, death taxes, individual income taxes, I mean big deals.  But something that’s going to cost somewhere between $5 and $10 trillion.”

Thatcher says a farm bill extension needs to take place before Congress adjourns on December 20th.

Brownfield spoke with Thatcher at the Illinois Corn Growers annual meeting in Bloomington, Illinois.
