Extreme heat hits Missouri State Fair

An extreme heat warning is in effect during the Missouri State Fair and it’s being felt across the fairgrounds.
Missouri Ag Director Chris Chinn tells Brownfield “We just want everyone to find water, stay hydrated and find shade and air conditioning.”
But a little heat doesn’t stop the fair. In MFA arena, the youth cattle shows continued amid the heat, with 4-H, FFAers and supporters, like Jim Puyear from Moniteau County, getting cattle ready.
“We’re looking forward to watching the show.”
Other livestock exhibitors, like Atley Kleinman from Lawrence County, are just trying to keep cattle cool, preparing to show over the weekend.
“We rinse the cattle at least once or twice a day, and we have a cooler that keeps water misted on them,” she says. “We also have cool towels and ice, all the fun stuff to keep them as comfortable as they can be.”
Some State Fair attendees started the day with ice cream. Stacy Dohle with Midwest Dairy says the Gerkin Dairy Center has been busy already, with a few new items to try and a butter sculpture to see.
“It’s a great, fun sculpture of a cow eating some popcorn and two kids watching a baseball game. Their jerseys are 1776, a nod to the 250th celebration theme of the fair,” she says. “There’s also a new ice cream flavor for the fair: red, white and boom.”
The Missouri State Fair continues through Sunday, August 23.
