Fall a good time to look for weed resistance
Herbicide-resistant weeds could be making their presence known this fall.
Corteva Agriscience Enlist field specialist Mark Mongen says weed resistance can develop quickly or slowly depending on the weed species and other factors.
“If conditions are good and you made timely herbicide applications and you still don’t get control, that could be a sign of resistance.”
He tells Brownfield another possible sign is if a dead weed is within a short distance of a surviving weed of the same size and species.
“The controlled weed indicates the herbicide was working (so) be sure to scout the fields a few weeks after an application to check for surviving weeds. I mean that’s key.”
Mongen says if surviving weeds are isolated in spots of a field resistance might be present.
