Fall is the time to control poison hemlock

Poison hemlock is a biennial weed that can be toxic to both livestock and humans if enough is consumed.  Purdue Extension weed specialist Bill Johnson says the weed is becoming a more common occurrence in pastures.

If it is a problem, he says now is the time to treat poison hemlock.  “We do have some active rosette formation in the fall and the weed is much easier to control in the fall than it is in the spring,” he says.  Growers that have poison hemlock should really think about fall applied herbicide treatment whether they are treating pasture or fields going to corn or soybeans next year.”

Even though, he says, its growth and appearance may be more visible in the spring.
