Farm bill path remains uncertain as Senate weighs House framework

Lawmakers in Washington continue working toward a new five-year farm bill as farmers push for long-term certainty in federal ag policy.

U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley suggests the Senate’s farm bill could look similar to the package that recently advanced out of the House Ag Committee.

“Senator Boozman is working very hard to get a bill out of the Senate Ag Committee,” Grassley said. “But my guess is the route we may have to take here is to just leave the House bill at the desk and work off the House bill.”

The Iowa Republican tells Brownfield, “That probably isn’t exactly what Chairman Boozman would want us to do, but if it’s brought up under what we call “Regular Order” and can be amended, we can fix some of those things.”

But the farm bill continues to face an uncertain path through both chambers. Farmers and ranchers have been without a full five-year farm bill since the 2018 Farm Bill expired in 2023. The 2018 legislation has received yearly short-term extensions since the initial expiration date.
