Farm labor is still in demand

A senior economist at The Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City says the ag sector continues to struggle with labor.

Cortney Cowley says the number of jobs isn’t the problem.

“Obviously, labor is still in very large demand and like we’ve seen in the rest of the economy coming out of the pandemic, labor markets have been very tight, meaning that there’s typically been more jobs available for those people who are in the labor market seeking job,” she says.

She tells Brownfield coming out of the pandemic, there were two job openings for every unemployed worker.

“Those are very historic levels,” she says. “We’ve started to come down from that, but in certain parts of the country, we’re still at 1 to 1 1/2 job openings for every unemployed worker.”

Cowley says there are jobs available, but the difficulty lies in filling those positions.
