Farm safety top of mind at harvest
A county commissioner who farms in southern Minnesota is emphasizing farm safety as harvest continues.
Kevin Paap of Garden City in Blue Earth County says there was recently a farm accident and a neighbor lucky to be alive.
“And I think we’ve just got to remember farming has got a lot of high-speed moving parts.”
He tells Brownfield combine belts, chains, drive shafts, and power takeoffs all pose a threat.
“Whether it’s on the grain cart auger, moving grain, getting into confined spaces. We’re going to have manure gases when we agitate the manure before we apply it here soon. So just want everybody to stop and slow down and think about farm safety.”
Paap has served in emergency medical services (EMS) for more than forty years and encourages drivers to be patient with slower moving farm equipment.
