Farmer says next two growing seasons could test farm finances

A central Iowa farmer says the next two growing seasons will test many farmers financially.
Morey Hill says the price of diesel is impacting budgets in 2026.
“Kind of used to it with fertilizer as far as knowing what to expect. But man you look at diesel and it’s sticker shock. I hope we can get some of this RFS and biofuels policy figured out so that maybe that will help lower the price of diesel.”
He tells Brownfield many growers locked in fertilizer needs last fall, and he’s concerned purchases for 2027 could be more challenging.
“Sitting okay for this year. Concerned about next year. It’s going to be a nervous watch and see at this point.”
Hill says he feels fortunate to have locked in his nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium for 2026 before prices jumped.
