Farmers continue to tackle higher fertilizer prices
A market specialist says the fertilizer market has been confusing for growers.
“In the face of declining commodity prices, fertilizer prices are holding strong,” said Galynn Beer with AgroLiquid.
Beer says there’s some potential for phosphorus prices to move lower. “And if it doesn’t, I think the response from the grower is going to be taking away some of the demand with reduced applications. I’m not sure that’s the right move, but I also understand they’ve got to pencil in a profit for their banker.”
Speaking to Brownfield at the 2024 Ag PhD Field Day near Sioux Falls, South Dakota,he said farmers should be patient with their input decisions for 2025. “I’m not hearing much locking in of fertilizer right now. I think they don’t feel like the dust has settled on fertilizer prices.”
Beer says there’s also some added pressure from higher interest rates.
