Farmers crave data

A digital technology lead for a crop inputs business says farmers crave the data generated on their farms.

“To be put into places that create more understanding and value for them.”

Joel Wipperfurth with Winfield United says his company is helping producers make more informed decisions.

“We’ve got a data source that we’ve been producing on seed genetics and how those genetics perform before the farmer sees them. Then the next year, the farmer plants them and wants to know what to do with those (data sets).”

Wipperfurth tells Brownfield it can be a challenge sifting through the data.

“Farmers have a lot of stuff going on, and the information can be overwhelming unless it’s been prioritized to where you’re trying to take action. And that’s really what we’re trying to help people do.”

He says Winfield United has connected John Deere to its Answer Tech Data Silo to allow farmers with Deere equipment to filter secure information using various downstream tools.

The Silo is Winfield’s cloud-based data management system launched in 2014.
