Farmers expect short-term farmland values to increase

According to the latest Purdue University/CME Group Ag Economy Barometer shows farmers expect farmland values to increase in the near term.

Jim Mintert with Purdue’s Center for Commercial Agriculture says recent trade negotiations likely contributed to the increase.

“I think it’s tied back to this idea that ag trade was going to be improving over the next few years and of course, that would lead back to stronger prices and stronger income levels and feed right back into farmland,” he says.

He tells Brownfield the rise was unexpected.

“You have to go all the way back to 2022 to see a time frame when that index was stronger than it was this month,” he says.  “It’s a little unusual to see that index bounce that much in one month, it has happened before, but it’s not a typical reaction.”

The Purdue University/CME Group Ag Economy Barometer is a nationwide measure of the health of the U.S. agricultural economy and surveys 400 agricultural producers on economic sentiment each month.
