Farmers faced with difficult decisions for 2027 crop
The vice president of the Illinois Corn Growers Association says most producers are not only preparing for harvest, but they’re also wading through uncertainty about the 2027 crop.
“It may seem like it’s a slow time on the farm, but a lot of important conversations are being had right now.”
Don Guinnip, who farms in Clark County, says fertilizer decisions are at the forefront.
“All the phosphate products are very high-priced. They’ve not leveled off. They’re hard to get.” He says, “The commercials and the co-ops have to order in. It takes a while to fill the warehouses, so right now those conversations are going on.”
He tells Brownfield, “So much of the fertilizer and some of the energy things are so unstable because of all these political issues. It’s hard for a farmer to make a budget.”
Guinnip says the conflict in the Middle East has compounded an already difficult financial scenario for farmers that are facing multiple years of stagnant commodity prices and ever-increasing input costs.

Especially considering AG would vote trump a third time if given the chance.
