Farmers facing off against corn aphids
Two central Illinois farmers are among many in the state fighting corn aphids.
“They’re everywhere. I’ve heard some guys say that it’s literally sucking the life out of some of their corn.”
Clint Gorden, who farms in Macon County, says they’re not usually a concern.
“It’s very hybrid specific, which from what I understand that’s not uncommon,” he says.
Daniel Herriott, who farms in Champaign County, tells Brownfield…
“The tough part is there’s not much research that’s ever been done about what aphids can do after pollination and what kind of damage they can cause.” He says, “Most of the research out there just talks about how they can affect pollination.”
Both farmers say they’ve added insecticide treatments to their planned fungicide applications to combat the pest.
