Farmers gaining interest in short-stature corn

There could be another uptick in short-stature corn acreage this year.

Stine Seed CEO Myron Stine says more farmers are talking about growing short corn.

“Our definition of short-stature corn is probably different than some other companies have, so as that whole thing has morphed into what it is today we certainly do see growers gravitating towards those types of genetics.”

He tells Brownfield there are several advantages to short-stature corn.

“Towards higher populations, towards a shorter stature-type plant, towards a higher management-type plant to make sure they’re getting more yield per acre. So yes, without a doubt we see that.”

Stine says growers are having success with 80 to 100-inch corn because of ease of application for crop protection products later in the season and more importantly overall yield performance.
