Farmers looking for efficiency
Tighter margins have many farmers looking a little closer at their budgets this year.
Illinois farmer Kenny Hartman says these lower commodity prices mean he has to be more efficient. “We are going to be at more break even prices,” he says. “We are wanting to get the prices up. But we may have to cut back as far as machinery costs and purchases and things like that.”
He tells Brownfield it is also important to have a market for his crop. “We need exports right now, too,” he says. “We are definitely supportive of Trade Promotion Authority for our president – we need that so we can work on getting more exports to these foreign countries.”
Hartman farms south east of St. Louis.
