Farmers remain concerned about the lack of a 5-year farm bill
Darke County, Ohio, farmer Matthew Aultman says volatility in the ag industry is ongoing, and farmers need some assurance. “My biggest concern is getting a farm bill signed or a Continuing Resolution here at the end of the year,” he says. “And then look how that plays out.:”
Ohio Farm Bureau president Bill Patterson says farmers and ranchers are going another year without an updated farm bill. “How are we going to make sure that agriculture in the long term is viable,” he says. “And is there a way that we can work together with the government to make sure that we’re supporting these farms through these times? So that things look good on the other side.”
He tells Brownfield that with Republican control of the U.S. House, the Senate, and a Republican President, getting a farm bill finished could be easier. “But, there are so many factions within there, it’s hard to figure out a path forward,” he says. “Where agriculture will find something that just simply puts forth the programs in the farm bill that we need.”
