Farmer’s timing saved thousands in fuel costs

A Wisconsin farmer is glad he took early action to save money on fuel.

Zeb Zuehls grows corn, soybeans, and hay in South Central Wisconsin near Montello. Zuehls tells Brownfield he secured his fuel as soon as the Iran-U.S. conflict broke out. “I filled the tank. I did it the first weekend of the war. I called the guy right away, and it had jumped thirty cents, but since then, it’s jumped two dollars, so I’m pretty happy. Otherwise, it would have been an extra six thousand dollars out of my pocket just for fuel.”

Zuehls says he’s making fewer field passes by banding his fertilizer while strip tilling and using a large planter.  He expects his recent fuel purchase to cover the summer haying season, but he’s hoping prices drop again before he refills the tank at harvest time.
