Farmers turning to technology amid rising security concerns

The CEO of Tactacam says new data shows on-farm thefts are on the rise.
Jeff Peel says nearly 39% of farmers have experienced equipment theft or tampering.
“It’s not just farms, but also construction sites.” He says, “Everything is so valuable these days when it comes to equipment, and gas, and all of the things that, unfortunately, now there are always people out there looking to take advantage of that.”
He tells Brownfield that many farmers are turning to technology to protect their investments.
“A lot of our agricultural people, who are also hunters, were saying, ‘Hey, are there opportunities here where you could build cameras that would be specific to more of a security purpose in areas that we don’t have Wi-Fi, and we don’t have the opportunity to have video security?’”
Peel says advancements in cell cams are giving farmers an affordable way to monitor their property in the palm of their hand.
“You can do it all in real time.” He says, “If you get a picture or an alert that comes right to your phone that says something’s going on at the barn, it allows you to connect live, actually be able to tilt, zoom, and follow it around to see what exactly is going on.”
He says app-connected gate sensors to ensure livestock remain safe are coming soon.
