Farmers Union legislative fly-in covers more than just farm bill
Ag policy beyond the farm bill was discussed during the National Farmers Union legislative fly-in last week.
Minnesota Farmers Union president Gary Wertish tells Brownfield biofuels came up in conversations with lawmakers.
“We have an opportunity with Sustainable Aviation Fuel, but at the same time as they are writing the rules for that program we need to be active so the rules are written so Midwestern farmers can take advantage of that too.”
He says another topic was climate smart agriculture.
“I think farmers are generally progressive in how we can improve our operations on the farm, we’ve always done that. So there is an opportunity, a lot of funding going into that. And that gets back to the farm bill.”
Wertish says after talking to leaders in both the House and Senate Ag Committees he remains hopeful a farm bill can get done during the lame duck session.
