Farmfest to host House Ag Committee Farm Bill listening session
One of the organizers of a popular summer farm show in southwest Minnesota says attendees will have a unique opportunity to weigh in on the next Farm Bill with some of the lawmakers tasked with writing it.
Kent Thiesse tells Brownfield members of the U.S. House Agriculture Committee will participate in a Farm Bill listening session on the final day of Farmfest.
“Hosted by Committee Chairman Mike Conaway of Texas and Ranking Member Collin Peterson of Minnesota. And we’ve heard indications that several members of the House Ag Committee will be in attendance, from the Upper Midwest as well as a few from out of the area.”
The listening session begins at 10am on August 3rd and is one of only six planned by the House Ag Committee in preparation for the 2018 Farm Bill.
Thiesse says people can sign up to address committee members, and expects a lot of discussion on federal commodity programs and crop insurance.
“The administration and some members of Congress have proposed some pretty dramatic changes to crop insurance, like limiting the amount of the premium subsidy or getting rid of the Harvest Price option that most farmers utilize in their revenue protection policies.”
Minnesota Farmfest is located at the Gilfillan Estate near Morgan, and runs August 1st through the 3rd.
